bananas

There are many varieties of bananas, but the common yellow banana found in grocery stores and markets worldwide is called the Cavendish banana. Suprisingly, the banana is considered a botanical berry. The banana should be a staple in every household due to its incredible health benefits and its low cost!

Why is it good for my body? Bananas are one of the highest sources of potassium, a key mineral that is not naturally created by the body. Eating 1-2 bananas a day can help to maintain proper heart function. Bananas have a natural balance of sugars and soluble fiber, giving a slow but stable energy release to the body. Bananas are also a great source of vitamin B6, other vitamins and minerals, as well as several natural antioxidants.
Where does it come from? Bananas are believed to have their origin in Australia & Papua New Guinea. They grow in tropical environments, but are also cultivated in greenhouses.
What season is it fresh? Bananas are widely available year round.
How do I store and handle it? To ripen bananas, place in a bowl with other fruit that will be producing ethylene, like tomatoes. Once bananas are ripe, you can store them in the refrigerator. The skins will turn black, but the fruit will keep longer. Over-ripe bananas can be peeled and frozen for later use in baked good or smoothies.
What are ways to eat it? Bananas are one of nature's real "fruit snacks" and are a favorite from babies to seniors! They are delicious on their own, in a fruit salad, baked in a bread or muffin, or blended up in a smoothie.
How do I introduce it to first-time tasters? Mashed banana is a perfect beginning food for babies. Another way to prepare bananas for babies is to roast them on a baking sheet in their skin. Roasting helps to develop a rich, sweet flavor. They can be mashed together with roasted sweet potato for a filling meal.
